The Ampelos is an iconic representation of the following verse from the Gospel of John: "I am the vine, you are the branches. He that abides in me, and I in him, the same bears much fruit; for without me, you can do nothing." -John 15:5. All twelve of Christ's Disciples are seated in the branches of the vine around Christ, Who is in the center. Above Christ, you can also see the Holy Spirit and God the Father depicted, completing the Holy Trinity.

This Holy Icon is comprised of two individual icons: The Archangel Gabriel and the Theotokos. Each piece measures 5.9" x 11.8" (15 x 30 cm), with a recessed style border. 

The Story Behind This Icon:

This icon portrays the Annunciation of the Theotokos, a feast which is celebrated on March 25, exactly nine months before the Nativity. This feast celebrates the day on which the Archangel Gabriel appeared to the Virgin Mary to ask her if she wanted to be the mother of God. Mary was selected by God as the most pure woman on the planet, but was not forced to give birth to Christ. She was given the option to decline, but chose to be the mother of God. On that day, the first cells of Christ appeared inside of Mary’s womb, but Mary remained a virgin, as no man ever touched her.

The Story Behind This Icon:

This icon portrays the Annunciation of the Theotokos, a feast which is celebrated on March 25, exactly nine months before the Nativity. At the very top part of the icon, the half circle is the Kingdom of God with three rays representing the presence of the Holy Spirit directed to the Virgin Mary. The Archangel Gabriel holds a stick which is the symbol of a messenger. His feet are spread to show the movement of running. On the right side of the icon, the Virgin Mary is seated, but elevated, a sign that as the Mother of God she is “greater in honor than the cherubim, and beyond compare more glorious than the seraphim, who without corruption gave birth to God the Word”. The movement of her right hand shows that she responds by accepting Gabriel’s message. In her left hand, the Virgin Mary holds a spindle of scarlet yarn, symbolizing the task of preparing the purple and scarlet material to be used in making the veil for the Temple in Jerusalem.

Archangel Gabriel has been intimately involved in the history of humanity announcing the good news from God of the salvation of mankind and is celebrated by the Orthodox Church for his role as messenger on many occasions: 

• announcing the future incarnation of the Son of God to those of the Old Testament; 
• inspiring the Prophet Moses to write the first five books of the Old Testament;
• announcing the coming tribulations of the Chosen People to the Prophet Daniel;
• appearing to Saint Anna with the joyous news that she would give birth to the Virgin Mary;
• appearing to Zachariah to inform him that his wife Elizabeth would bear the Forerunner John the Baptist;
• announcing to the Virgin Mary the incarnation of the Son of God from her (the Annunciation), to the great rejoicing of all mankind;
• proclaiming the good news of the Resurrection to the Myrrh-Bearing Women outside the Empty Tomb of Christ. 

Archangel Gabriel’s efforts on behalf of humanity are celebrated on March 26, the day immediately following the Feast of the Annunciation. In Orthodox iconography Gabriel is usually portrayed with wings and holding the characteristic staff of the messenger in his right hand, consistent with his role in human history. The Story Behind This Icon:

The Archangel Michael is one of the most well known Angels, as he is the Archistrategos, or chief of forces. Michael has interceded for the faithful multiple times throughout history, especially in wars. For example, he helped in defeating the Persians in Daniel 10:13, slaying the Assyrian barbarians, and protecting the Israelites in the Great Exodus. Later in time, he appeared to help Constantine the Great multiple times in battle. Archangel Michael is also known as one of the protectors of the monastery of Dochiariou in Mount Athos, appearing to Saint Neophytus in his lifetime. One of the most celebrated miracles of Archangel Michael is saving the church of Colossae, where pagans tried to divert the flow of the river and wipe out the church. Archangel Michael appeared carrying a cross and blocking the water from the church.

This miracle is commemorated on September 6, but Archangel Michael's feast day is celebrated on November 8, along with the other angels and bodiless powers.

The Lord God appointed the Archangel Michael as Chief Commander of the Heavenly Hosts, casting down the arrogantly proud Lucifer from Heaven and the other fallen spirits when they rebelled against God. The name Michael comes from the Hebrew meaning “who is like unto God”> Archangel Michael is honored for his actions in defense of Heaven and humanity, both in the Old Testament and New Testament. He is a steadfast defender of the Orthodox faith and of faithful people, often appearing in defense of the helpless. Archangel Michael is particularly beloved in the Russian Orthodox Church for many miracles attributed to him in defense of the Russian Orthodox people. Orthodox Christians invoke Archangel Michael for protection from invasion by enemies and from civil war, and for the defeat of adversaries on the field of battle. He conquers all spiritual enemies. Archangel Michael is portrayed in Orthodox iconography in his role as Chief Commander of the Heavenly Hosts, holding a sword, shield and/or spear and adorned in armor (usually in the style of whatever culture created the icon) as well as wings and a red cape.

The Story Behind This Icon:

In the year 1462, during the Turkish Ottoman occupation, the Monastery of Taxiarches on Lesvos, Greece was attacked by pirates who threatened the monks with death if they did not reveal the whereabouts of the hidden villagers. The monks refused and the invaders slaughtered them all except for one, Gabriel, who remained hidden. The pirates noticed him from afar and returned to kill him, but the Archangel Michael appeared and with his own sword, forced them to retreat in terror. The monk survived and gathered up the earth that was red from the blood of the martyred monks and shaped it into the icon of the Archangel as it is today, while it was still vivid in his memory.  According to legend, the monk did not have enough of the dirt-blood mix and so the head of the Archangel has turned out disproportionately larger to the rest of his body. Centuries have passed and the Icon of the Archangel Michael is still venerated by thousands of pilgrims every year.

The original icon is now kept in the interior of the church. Many islanders and pilgrims have had personal experiences of miracles granted for them by the icon. This is evident by the numerous gifts housed inside the church.

Archangel Raphael is lesser known than Archangels Gabriel and Michael – he is only explicitly mentioned once in Holy Scriptures, the Book of Tobit in the Old Testament – but is no less important to humanity and our faith. While Gabriel is a messenger and Michael is a warrior, Archangel Raphael is a healer, providing healing to the earth and its inhabitants. In Hebrew, his name means “It is God Who has healed”. He cares for the recovery of the sick, serves as the unseen guide for those who are traveling with important tasks and is the protector of weddings and conjugal love. It is also believed that Archangel Raphael was referenced in the Gospel of John, where the Apostle mentioned the pool called Bethesda in which an angel of the Lord descended and troubled the water, healing the first to step in – the angel, of course, being the Archangel Raphael.

The original Holy Icon of Christ Pantocrator is one of the oldest surviving Byzantine-style icons, dating from the 500s AD. It is the earliest known surviving depiction of Jesus Christ as Pantocrator (Greek for “ruler of all”) and is widely regarded as one of the most important and recognizable works in the study of early Christianity. Our icon here is a recreation of the original, located at Saint Catherine’s monastery in the Sinai desert in Egypt. The original is believed to have been produced in the Roman capital of Constantinople and sent to Saint Catherine’s Monastery as a gift – the monastery enjoyed significant patronage from the imperial capital for many years. Because the icon was safely held in the dry desert of the Sinai, it avoided the iconoclasm of the 700s and 800s AD, thus making it one of the few pre-iconoclasm icons surviving to the modern era. Many experts in iconography agree that the icon was written to represent the dual nature of Christ, both God and man: His features on His right side (viewer’s left) represent the qualities of His human nature, while His left side (viewer’s right) represent His divinity.

The Story Behind This Icon:

This unique icon, "Deisis” (Supplication), depicts St. Paisios and St. John the Russian on the two far ends along with the Virgin Mary and St. John the Theologian, all praying to Christ in Majesty. When praying to the Virgin Mary or to a Saint, we pray for their intercession, asking them to take our prayer to God Himself; We pray to the Saints, so they can pray for us. This icon of Deisis is reproduced, with permission, from the authentic icon painted by the monks of the Cell of St. John the Theologian, Holy Monastery of Koutloumousiou in Mount Athos, Greece. The Story Behind This Icon:

This icon of the Theotokos portrays the “falling-asleep” of the Mother of Jesus Christ, surrounded by the Apostles. In the center of the icon, Christ holds a small child that represents the pure soul of the Virgin Mary. Above Christ, the gates of Heaven are open and ready to receive the Mother of God. Saint Peter (on the right) incenses the body of the Theotokos while Apostle Paul bows in honor of the Theotokos.

The Dormition of the Mother of God is one of the greatest feasts of the Church and is celebrated on August 15.

The icon “Entry into Jerusalem (Palm Sunday)” depicts one of the most important events in the life of our Lord Jesus Christ.

On the left part of the icon is the Mount of Olives while on the right is the city of Jerusalem. In the center, Jesus Christ is shown sitting upon a donkey, an animal of peace, followed by his disciples and He is blessing the crowds. People are laying red fabric, and welcoming Jesus with palm branches in hand, shouting the words "Hosanna! Blessed is He Who comes in the Name of the Lord, the King of Israel!”. 

Jesus entered Jerusalem one day after the resurrection of Lazaros, and this important event in His life is celebrated by the Church on the last day of the Lent, marking also the beginning of the Holy Week.
