The Story Behind This Icon:

Saint Olga lived in the early tenth century A.D. in Russia. She married into the royal family through Prince Igor the First, whose father was the first leader of Russia. After her husband was murdered, Olga was the temporary ruler of the state (for almost twenty years) until their son, Svyatoslav was old enough to rule himself. She was well known for her strong and stable administration. During her time in power, Olga went to visit Constantinople, in which she found Christianity and converted. She returned back to Kiev to live the rest of her life in peace. Although she, herself did not convert the Russian people to Christianity, by becoming Christian herself, she influenced her people and her descendants to follow suit.

Saint Olga's feast day is celebrated on July 11.

The Story Behind This Icon:

Saint Vladimir was the Grand Prince of Kiev when Orthodox Christianity was introduced into present-day Russia and Ukraine. He is the grandson of Saint Olga (also Saint Olga), who converted to Christianity, and Saint Vladimir is credited with the conversion of the Slavic lands to the one true Orthodox faith.

He was a devout pagan, building pagan statues and spreading paganism wherever he went. During his many travels, he finally met someone of a different faith, and discovered that there were many different religions. As a result of this discovery, he sent out envoys everywhere he could. His servants met with Jews, Muslims, Catholics and many more, but discovered that they were all “unhappy”. After finding Hagia Sophia in Constantinople, the envoys knew they had found what they were looking for. Vladimir himself came to visit, and converted as soon as he saw what Orthodoxy was about. He returned to his homeland and destroyed all traces of paganism, while showing his people the Orthodox faith.

Saint Vladimir’s feast day is celebrated on July 15.

The Story Behind This Icon:

Saint John was born in 1690 in southern Russia, to a poor Orthodox Christian family. He was drafted to the army during the Russo-Turkish war and was taken prisoner, ending up as a slave in Turkey. Saint John was abused and tortured for his faith in Christ, but always refused to convert to Islam. John’s master admired his resolve and as a result placed him in the stables to tend to and live in. He lived his life as a Christian slave in a Muslim world. Prophesying his death, Saint John wanted to receive Communion one last time. He asked a priest to bring the mysteries to him in the stable, but the priest felt it was too dangerous. Instead, he carved out a hole in an apple and placed the Communion inside (covering it with wax so it wouldn’t seep into the apple). After he received the mysteries, Saint John passed away in Christ.

Saint John the Russian's feast day is celebrated on May 27.

Upon the opening of Saint Stephen’s coffin there was an earthquake, and there came out of the coffin such a fragrance, that no one remembered to have ever smelt any thing like it. And from the heavens they heard angelic voices, which could be heard for a great distance, saying: “Glory to God in the Highest, and on earth peace, to men of good pleasure.”

The Orthodox Church today August 2 celebrates the translation of the relics of Saint Stephen which were lost for multiple centuries after his martyrdom and recovered in either the fourth or fifth century AD. The Story Behind This Icon: 

Born on the island of Naxos, Greece in 1851, Saint Nicholas Planas (also known as Papa-Nicholas Planas) lost his father at a very young age and moved to Athens due to financial difficulties. Wanting to please his mother, he married at the age of 17 and soon became the father of one child. His wife passed away when their son was one year old, thus spending most of his life in celibacy. His only aspiration was to serve the Church  (an aspiration and love passed to him by his grandfather) and he was ordained a deacon in 1879.

The Story Behind This Icon:

Saint Cyprian was born in Antioch and lived as a pagan who practiced magic and worshipped demons. When Cyprian was asked to brew a love potion to capture the love of Justina, he tried every demonic trick possible, but failed. It was impossible because Justina was a Christian who had the grace of God upon her. He realized the power of Christ, he burned all of his magic books and was baptized. He converted many pagans to Christianity. Justina also lived in Antioch, but turned away from her parents’ paganism and became a Christian at a young age. She dedicated herself to God, spending her time in prayer and fasting. Because of their faith in God, the two were captured and sent to Nicomedia; They were tortured and killed but through their faith they converted one of the soldiers present during their martyrdom.

Through Saints Cyprian & Justina's intercession, many have healed from suffering satanic influence and black magic. 

Their feast day is celebrated on October 2.

Saint Joseph was born on the island of Paros, Greece, in 1897. His father passed away when his was very young in age and he grew up with his mother and his six siblings. He attended school only until 2nd grade; as one of the oldest, he had to work and help his mother. It was not until his twenties, when he saw a vision of two Angels dressed like guards leading him to God; he then began to read books about the Holy Fathers. As he read about them, he realized that he wanted to be like them and lead a life like theirs. In 1921, having practiced living ascetically for almost two years, he decided to go to Mount Athos. Eventually, he met Father Arsenios who  became his companion in asceticism and hesychasm. After some years, they returned to Katounakia, where Saint Joseph became a spiritual father. Many came to him to join his brotherhood  but most could not maintain the level of extreme asceticism Saint Joseph’s practiced. Many of the monks in his brotherhood eventually became saints: Joseph of Vatopaidi; Father Ephraim (who founded most of the monasteries in the United States); Father Haralambos of Dionysiou; and Saint Ephraim of Katounakia (who was not a part of the brotherhood, but often received guidance from Saint Joseph). Saint Joseph fell asleep in 1959. Depicted in this icon around Saint Joseph the Hesychast are: Saint Ephraim Katounakiotis, Father Charalambos Dionysiatis, Father Athanasios (Saint's Joseph brother), Father Joseph Vatopaidinos, Father Theofylaktos Neoskytiotis, Father Ephraim of Arizona and Elder Arsenios (his fellow struggler of more than 40 years). The Monastery on the left is Nea Skiti of Mount Athos and the building on the right is simply scenery from Mount Athos. 

Saint Joseph’s feast day is celebrated on August 15, which is also the Dormition of the Theotokos. As a result, some Fathers on Mount Athos celebrate his feast day on August 16.

The Story Behind This Icon:

This Holy Icon depicts the Apostle Timothy, to whom were written the Apostle Paul's First and Second Epistles to Timothy. Saint Timothy was born of a Greek pagan father and a Jewish mother in Lystra of Lycaonia. His mother's name was Eunice, and his grandmother's name was Lois (II Tim. 1:5). He became the disciple of the Apostle Paul when the latter first preached in Lystra, and he followed Saint Paul during the whole period of the Apostle's preaching. Afterwards, Timothy was consecrated by him as the first Bishop of the Church in Ephesus. Under the supervision of Saint John the Evangelist, who governed all the churches in Asia, he completed his life as a martyr in the year 97 A.D. He was stoned to death by the pagans, because, as some surmise, he opposed the festival held in honor of Artemis (Diana in Latin). 

Saint Timothy’s feast day is celebrated on January 22.

The Story Behind this Icon:

Saint Martin was born in Pannonia (modern-day Hungary) in 316 AD. His father was an officer in the Roman legions and thus Martin also served in the army, albeit unwillingly as he considered himself a soldier for Christ. One winter, Saint Martin saw a beggar shivering in the cold, and cut his cloak in two to give half to the beggar. (This scene is depicted in our Holy Icon where Saint Martin, astride his horse, extends his sword so as to cut his cloak for the beggar.) That night, Jesus Christ appeared to Martin wearing his cloak, and Martin heard Christ say to the angels around Him, “Martin is only a catechumen, but he has clothed Me with this garment.” Saint Martin was baptized soon thereafter.

Saint Martin left the legions for religious reasons after the barbarian invasions of Gaul. He travelled to various places across the Empire, spending some time as a hermit on an island off the Italian peninsula. After several years of ascetic life, Saint Martin was chosen as Bishop of Tours in 371 AD though, as bishop, he did not give up his monastic lifestyle, and the place where he settled outside Tours became a monastery. He is regarded the founder of monasticism in France. He is called the Merciful because of his generosity and care for the poor and he received the grace to work miracles. Saint Martin reposed in Christ in 397 AD and many churches in the West were dedicated to him.

The Story Behind This Icon:

Saint Cosmas Aetolian was not only a great missionary who provided education to the poor villagers - he established 250 schools, charities and churches within a six year period in the area of Aetolia during the 18th century, but he also received from God the gift of prophecy. 

Here are only a few of his prophecies and sayings, some of which have already become reality:

- "From schools will come things that your mind can not imagine."

- "The time will come when your enemies will take away from you even the ashes from your fires, but don't give up your faith as others will."

- "The time will come when people will speak to one another from far away places, for example from Constantinople to Russia, as if they were in adjoining rooms."

- "The rich will become poor and the poor will die."

Saint Cosmas Aetolian is celebrated on the 24th of August.

The original icon lies on a relic case of Saint Cyprian, which contains a piece of his skull. The circular inscription around the icon signifies the dedication of the relic by the Metropolitan Neophytos of Morphou in Cyprus, in the year 2002.

The first Sunday after Easter commemorates the assurance of the Apostle Thomas. After the Resurrection, Christ appeared to His Disciples, yet the Apostle Thomas was not present and later declared to the others: “Unless I see in His hands the print of the nails and unless I put my hand into the mark on His side, I will not believe”. Christ appeared miraculously a second time, eight days after the Resurrection and asked the Apostle Thomas to touch the wounds on His body. The eighth day has a significant meaning as the number "eight" in Christian theology signifies completion, fullness and a new beginning. The Apostle Thomas verified the wounds and was convinced that the Resurrection was true and real and he exclaimed “My Lord and My God”, confirming the miracle of the Resurrection as credible. Thomas’ absence during Christ’ first appearance was not by chance but part of God’s providence. 

This beautiful icon depicts the Apostle Thomas wanting to see for himself the wounds of Christ’s hands and side. The Greek wording on the icon reads “The Touching of Thomas”, as the icon does not show the doubt of Thomas, but rather his reassurance.

The Story Behind This Icon:

Saint Iakovos was born in Livisi of Asia Minor in 1920, where he lived with his mother and eight siblings. They lived in great poverty: only three of Saint Iakovos’ siblings survived past infancy. In 1925, his family moved to Evia, Greece to escape persecution and poor living conditions. The saint was blessed from a young age, seeing a vision of Saint Paraskevi telling him what he would grow up to be a monk. When he was twenty years old, the Second World War brought upon Greece’s Civil War following German occupation. Saint Iakovos was drafted for the war, but discharged two years later. In 1951, he began to live at the Monastery of Saint David in Evia, becoming a monk, deacon and a priest all in 1952. After years of spiritual practice, he became the Abbot of the monastery in 1975. He was well known for his spiritual capabilities, advice and confessions; many came to visit him. Saint Iakovos was proficient in exorcism. With the skull of Saint David of Evia (whom the monastery is named after), he was able to cast out demons from many faithful.

Saint Iakovos fell asleep in 1991 and his feast day is celebrated on November 22.

The Story Behind This Icon:

Saint Panteleimon was born in Nicomedia in 275 A.D under the name Pantoleon. Raised by a pagan father and a Christian mother, Pantoleon chose to become a Christian. He grew up to be a proficient physician, and began to practice medicine philanthropically, serving people in need for free. Because of his compassion to others, he was renamed “Panteleimon”, coming from the Greek word “eleimosini” or compassion. In the name of Christ, Panteleimon performed many miracles, including giving sight to a blind man. This miracle however, led to the martyrdom of the blind man who proclaimed his faith in Christ, as well as Panteleimon’s martyrdom, for performing a miracle in the name of God.

Saint Panteleimon the Russian's feast day is celebrated on July 27.
