The Story Behind This Icon:

Saint John was born in Antioch in the year 344 A.D. He was raised solely by his mother, surrounded by many scholars allowing him to develop deep knowledge for his age. In the year 370, he was ordained reader and devoted his life to God. Spending many years as a monk, he was finally ordained a Priest. Because of his renowned wisdom, John was chosen as the next Patriarch of Constantinople. Once in his position, he called out the many lax spiritual policies of the city of Constantinople, facing much criticism. As a result, he was banished by the very people who chose him as Patriarch. Saint John spent the rest of his life in exile, his last words being “Glory to God for all things”. Years after his death, his relics were returned to Constantinople by Emperor Theodosius. He was surnamed “Chrysostom” or “Golden Mouth” because of his famed wisdom.

Saint John the Chrysostom’s feast day is celebrated on November 13, on January 27 (when his relics were brought back to Constantinople 30 years after his death) as well as on January 30 as one of the Three Hierarchs.

The Story Behind This Icon:

Saint John Maximovitch was born in Kharkov of Russia in 1896. Saint John was raised as a Christian, and had to leave Russia in 1921 due to the civil war, arriving in Belgrade. There he became a monk and a priest, serving God in all his ways. In 1934, he was ordained as Bishop of Shanghai, but did not serve for long as the communist party took control. In the next twenty years he served again as Bishop in Brussels and Paris. Most notably, he became the Archbishop of San Francisco in 1962. Saint John was very hard on himself, and he was known for his spiritual capabilities. Saint John fell asleep in 1966. His body remains in the Cathedral of the Virgin Mary in San Francisco.

His feast day is celebrated on the Saturday closest to July 2.

The Story Behind This Icon:

Saint John was born in 1829 in northwestern Russia. He became a priest at 36 years of age, serving in the Church of Saint Andrew in Kronstadt, Russia. He was known for his commitment to the poor and those in need and was heavily involved in charity work. He travelled throughout Russia, helping many in need, and eventually became well known around the country. Enlightened by the Holy Spirit, he prophesied the Russian Revolution in 1917. He fell asleep in peace in 1908.

Saint John’s feast day is celebrated on December 20.

The Story Behind This Icon:

The Church commemorates Saint John the Baptist each year on January 7th. 

Saint John the Baptist was the last prophet of the Old Testament and has become one of the most revered saints in the Orthodox Church. He was a preacher from a young age and proclaimed that baptism was for the forgiveness of sins. For this reason, he is also called Saint John the Forerunner as he declared that “another will come after him Who will not baptize with water but with the Holy Spirit." Although the Lord Himself had no need of the remission of sins, He nevertheless came to John “to be baptized by him and to fulfill all righteousness” (Matth. 3, 13-15).

Saint John had a martyric end: following the Baptism of Jesus Christ, he was imprisoned by Herod Antipas, the governor of Galilee whom he had openly denounced for having left his lawful wife for the wife of his brother Philip, Herodias. On Herod’s birthday feast, Herodias’ daughter Salome, danced with Herod who, in turn, promised to give her whatever she asked for. After consulting with her wicked mother, Salome asked to be given the head of John the Baptist on a plate. Herod gave the order to cut off the head of John and give it to Salome.

Joanna, the pious wife of Herod buried the head of John the Baptist on the Mount of Olives. The body of  John the Baptist was taken that night by the disciples of Jesus Christ who buried it at Sebastia.

Apolytikion of Synaxis of John the Baptist:

The memory of the just is celebrated with hymns of praise, but the Lord's testimony is sufficient for thee, O Forerunner; for thou hast proved to be truly even more venerable than the Prophets, since thou was granted to baptize in the running waters Him Whom they proclaimed. Wherefore, having contested for the truth, thou didst rejoice to announce the good tidings even to those in Hades: that God hath appeared in the flesh, taking away the sin of the world and granting us great mercy.

The Story Behind This Icon:

Saint John was born in 1690 in southern Russia, to a poor Orthodox Christian family. He was drafted to the army during the Russo-Turkish war and was taken prisoner, ending up as a slave in Turkey. Saint John was abused and tortured for his faith in Christ, but always refused to convert to Islam. John’s master admired his resolve and as a result placed him in the stables to tend to and live in. He lived his life as a Christian slave in a Muslim world. Prophesying his death, Saint John wanted to receive Communion one last time. He asked a priest to bring the mysteries to him in the stable, but the priest felt it was too dangerous. Instead, he carved out a hole in an apple and placed the Communion inside (covering it with wax so it wouldn’t seep into the apple). After he received the mysteries, Saint John passed away in Christ.

Saint John the Russian's feast day is celebrated on May 27.

The Story Behind This Icon:

Saint John the Theologian was Jesus Christ’s Beloved Disciple. Also known as John the Evangelist, Saint John and John of Patmos, the Beloved Disciple, he was the youngest of the Twelve Apostles and author of five books: The Gospel of John; The Epistles 1 John; 2 John; 3 John; and the Book of Revelation which he wrote while exiled on the island of Patmos, Greece around 90-95 A.D. Saint John was present for two miracles, the Transfiguration and the raising of the daughter of Jairus. He is the patron saint of those suffering from heart conditions.

Saint John the Theologian's primary feast day is celebrated on May 8 and his repose is commemorated on September 26.

The Story Behind This Icon:

Saint Joseph was born on the island of Paros, Greece, in 1897. His father passed away when his was very young in age and he grew up with his mother and his six siblings. He attended school only until 2nd grade; as one of the oldest, he had to work and help his mother. It was not until his twenties, when he saw a vision of two Angels dressed like guards leading him to God; he then began to read books about the Holy Fathers. As he read about them, he realized that he wanted to be like them and lead a life like theirs. In 1921, having practiced living ascetically for almost two years, he decided to go to Mount Athos. Eventually, he met Father Arsenios who  became his companion in asceticism and hesychasm. After some years, they returned to Katounakia, where Saint Joseph became a spiritual father. Many came to him to join his brotherhood but most could not maintain the level of extreme asceticism Saint Joseph’s practiced. Many of the monks in his brotherhood eventually became saints: Joseph of Vatopaidi; Father Ephraim (who founded most of the monasteries in the United States); Father Haralambos of Dionysiou; and Saint Ephraim of Katounakia (who was not a part of the brotherhood, but often received guidance from Saint Joseph). Saint Joseph fell asleep in 1959.

Saint Joseph’s feast day is celebrated on August 15, which is also the Dormition of the Theotokos. As a result, some Fathers on Mount Athos celebrate his feast day on August 16.

The Story Behind This Icon:

Commemorating all physicians, this icon makes for a beautiful gift for all those in the medical field.

Saint Luke the Surgeon (4/14/1877 – 6/11/1961), Archbishop of Simferopol and Crimea, Professor of Anatomy and Surgery, the Blessed Surgeon, is a contemporary Saint of the Christian Orthodox Church. Saint Luke the Surgeon was born in East Crimea to an impoverished family.

When it was time to pursue higher education, he graduated from the Kiev Academy of Fine Arts, but soon decided against pursuing art in favor of a career that would give him the possibility to help people in need. From this desire, came his decision to become a physician. He graduated at the age of 26 from the University of Kiev and excelled in anatomy, partly as a result of his exceptional drawing abilities.

Out of compassion to the blind beggars, he also studied ophthalmology and in a very short time introduced a novel technique for curing trachoma and other serious eye conditions, ultimately restoring thousands of people’s sight. His innovative research brought to life manuals that are still used today.

Following the death of his wife at an early age, Saint Luke the Surgeon was led towards the priesthood and ultimately was ordained at the age of 44.  From 1922 until the end of his life, he was arrested, exiled and horrifically tortured.  During the last nine years of his life, he was blind from glaucoma, but still showed patience.

One cannot distinguish the Bishop from the physician. Saint Luke served as both, simultaneously and everywhere. He would heal his patients both through medical science, but also through prayer. The Bishop’s deep faith was always present in his life and work.

He is known to have refused to attend his job at the hospital, unless he was permitted to hang an icon of the Mother of God in the operating room. Because of his great love for God, he was able to love all others, without exception and without discrimination.

In 1995 he was announced as a Saint by the Ukrainian Orthodox Church.

He is commemorated by our church on June 11^th, which marks the anniversary of his falling asleep in the Lord.

The Story Behind this Icon:

Saint Martin was born in Pannonia (modern-day Hungary) in 316 AD. His father was an officer in the Roman legions and thus Martin also served in the army, albeit unwillingly as he considered himself a soldier for Christ. One winter, Saint Martin saw a beggar shivering in the cold, and cut his cloak in two to give half to the beggar. (This scene is depicted in our Holy Icon where Saint Martin, astride his horse, extends his sword so as to cut his cloak for the beggar.) That night, Jesus Christ appeared to Martin wearing his cloak, and Martin heard Christ say to the angels around Him, “Martin is only a catechumen, but he has clothed Me with this garment.” Saint Martin was baptized soon thereafter.

Saint Martin left the legions for religious reasons after the barbarian invasions of Gaul. He travelled to various places across the Empire, spending some time as a hermit on an island off the Italian peninsula. After several years of ascetic life, Saint Martin was chosen as Bishop of Tours in 371 AD though, as bishop, he did not give up his monastic lifestyle, and the place where he settled outside Tours became a monastery. He is regarded the founder of monasticism in France. He is called the Merciful because of his generosity and care for the poor and he received the grace to work miracles. Saint Martin reposed in Christ in 397 AD and many churches in the West were dedicated to him.

The Story Behind This Icon:

Saint Matrona was born blind in 1881 in western Russia. During her baptism, the priest saw a cloud appear above her, showing blessings from above. At the age of fourteen, her family visited the city of Kronstadt to see Saint John. Without even seeing her, John yelled “Matrona, come here! She will be my heir, and will become the eighth pillar of Russia.” At the age of seventeen, Matrona became paralyzed from the waist down, unable to walk. She stayed in her room for almost all of her time, with icons surrounding her. Blind and paralyzed, Matrona had the grace of God upon her, seeing many people and prophesying the Russian revolution, as well as many other events. In 1925, she settled in Moscow, living there for around twenty years before beginning to move frequently. She was wanted by the communist government for inspiring faith in people, and secretly lived in the homes of Christians. Many people came to see her, as she was known for performing miracles. She passed away in 1952, having prophesied her death.

Saint Matrona’s feast day is celebrated on May 2.

The Story Behind This Icon:

Saint Nektarios was born in the mid-19th century in Selymbria, Thrace and was vastly recognized for his preaching and leadership capabilities. He graduated from the University of Athens in 1885, and thereafter was ordained a Priest and moved to Cairo, Egypt, where he served in the Church of Saint Nicholas. He was consecrated as the Bishop of Pentapolis (Metropolis of Egypt, back then). Then having served as Bishop of Cairo for a year before, he was unjustly removed.. Following this, he became director of the Rizarios Ecclesiastical School in Athens, followed by the Metropolitan of the island of Aegina, where he also established the Holy Trinity Monastery. Saint Nektarios spent the rest of his life there, all the while publishing and preaching. Many thought of him as a Saint because of his virtues, philosophies and theological capabilities.

Saint Nektarios' feast day is celebrated on November 9.

The Story Behind This Icon:

Known as the patron saint of all travelers and sailors. 

Saint Nicholas Bishop of Myra is also known as Nicholas the Wonderworker because of the many miracles attributed to his intercession. He lived during the reign of Saint Constantine the Great in Asia Minor. He was born to a wealthy Christian family, but after his parents died, he distributed his wealth to the poor.  He became Bishop of Myra soon after he returned from a pilgrimage to Egypt and Palestine. Later, he was imprisoned during the persecution of Diocletian, one of the most severe persecutions of Christians, but was released after the orders of Constantine the Great. He was present at the First Ecumenical Council at Nicea in the year 325 and was imprisoned again for slapping the heretic Arius, an act forbidden to the clergy. During the night, our Lord Jesus Christ and our Lady Theotokos appeared to some of the bishops who were seeking disciplinary action against him, and informed them that no punishment should be taken as he had acted not out of passion, but extreme love and piety.

Many incidents from his life, along with his habit of secretly giving to the poor and to those in need make Saint Nicholas one of the most well-known and loved Saints of our church. Some of the most known miracles include saving three innocent soldiers from a wrongful execution, chopping down a tree possessed by a demon, healing a woman with a withered hand and hundreds more through the years.

He reposed in the year 330 and his feast day is celebrated on December 6.

The Story Behind This Icon: 

Born on the island of Naxos, Greece in 1851, Saint Nicholas Planas (also known as Papa-Nicholas Planas) lost his father at a very young age and moved to Athens due to financial difficulties. Wanting to please his mother, he married at the age of 17 and soon became the father of one child. His wife passed away when their son was one year old, thus spending most of his life in celibacy. His only aspiration was to serve the Church  (an aspiration and love passed to him by his grandfather) and he was ordained a deacon in 1879.

The Story Behind This Icon:

Saint Nikephoros was born in 1890 in a small village on the island of Crete, Greece. His parents died when he was young, leaving him an orphan. At 16 years old he began to show signs of leprosy and left in secret for Cairo to avoid confinement on the Leper Island of Spinalonga. As his disease worsened, he returned to Greece, Chios this time, to live in a church for lepers led by Saint Anthimos. Two years later he was tonsured as a monk and lived a life of strict prayer and fasting. After the Chios leprosarium was closed in 1957, the two found residence in a leper home in Athens. Saint Nikephoros fell asleep in 1964, his relics becoming fragrant from Christ’s blessing. Saint Nikephoros the Leper is the patron saint of those suffering infectious diseases. In the midst of the 2020 Covid-19 pandemic, several people in Greece revealed that Saint Nikephoros the Leper appeared to them, assuring them of his intercession and protection as well as for the healing of those who suffered the disease.

Saint Nikephoros’ feast day is celebrated on January 4.

She returned back to Kiev to live the rest of her life in peace. Although she, herself did not convert the Russian people to Christianity, by becoming Christian herself, she influenced her people and her descendants to follow suit.

St. Paisios of Mount Athos, Monastic ~ St. Paisios the Athonite 

The Story Behind This Icon:

Saint Paisios was born in the early 1920s in the small town of Farasa, in Cappadocia, where the town priest was Saint Arsenios. Saint Paisios led a normal life and grew up to join the army during the Greek Civil War. He insisted on never firing a weapon, and therefore served as a radio operator. Once, during a battle, his unit was under heavy fire, but he prayed to the Panagia to intercede, and she quickly did, saving him and his unit. Following the Civil War, Saint Paisios became a monk, arriving on Mount Athos in 1950. He first settled at the monastery of Esphigmenou, before leaving for Philotheou. Later in life, Paisios suffered from lung problems and had to leave for Thessaloniki to be treated. During his time outside of Mt. Athos, he stayed with the Sisterhood of St. John the Theologian in Souroti, just outside of Thessaloniki. Saint Paisisos returned after a couple of years of treatment to live in the cell of Panagouda, which belongs to the Koutloumousiou Monastery. It was there where Saint Paisios became widely known. Many people from around the world came to see and speak with him. Saint Paisios had many God-given abilities and helped many who came to him, simultaneously praying for the entire world. In 1993, Saint Paisios left the Holy Mountain due to health issues. Saint Paisios lived for others, not caring at all for himself, which left him in a weakened health state. He slept in Christ in 1994 in the Monastery of Saint John the Theologian in Souroti, Greece.

Saint Paisios' feast day is celebrated on July 12.

This icon of Saint Paisios is reproduced, with permission, from the authentic icon painted by the monks in the Cell of St. John the Theologian Holy Monastery of Koutloumousiou in Mount Athos, Greece. This icon is part of our collection “Icons from Mount Athos”, which features all icons from the Cell of St. John the Theologian.

This icon is made of solid, natural Limewood that has been prepared by hand using traditional methods and organic materials. The background consists of 22 Karat gold leaves that were meticulously applied by hand, piece by piece.  

All of our icons are reproduced according to museum print standards and are authentic replicas of Holy Icons from Mount Athos and elsewhere.
