Saint Athanasios, born with the baptismal name Abraham, was born in Trebizond, northern Asia Minor. He was orphaned at an early age and adopted by a nun. After her death, he was taken to Constantinople to the imperial court and began his studies. Desiring to leave the worldly cares of the court, he left Constantinople for Mount Athos. There, after being tonsured a monk, Athanasios developed a friendship with Nikephoros Phocas, future emperor.

After a time of ascetic solitude in the wilderness of Mount Athos, Saint Athanasios was contacted by his friend, Emperor Nikephoros Phocas, who desired to build a monastery on the Holy Mountain. Initially hesitant, Saint Athanasios relented and began to select a site for construction. The monastery became known as the Lavra, established under a cenobitic monastic Rule on the model of the old Palestinian monasteries. Monks flocked from all over the world.

Turning to this wonderful icon, one year there occurred a famine that many monks began to quite the Lavra. Saint Athanasios, in a moment of weakness, considered leaving. Suddenly he beheld a woman walking to meet him, who said to him: "Would you forsake the monastery which was intended for glory from generation unto generation, just for a morsel of dry bread? Where is your faith? Turn around, and I shall help you.” “Who are you?” asked Athanasius. “I am the Mother of the Lord,” She answered, and bid Athanasius to strike his staff upon a stone. From the fissure came forth a spring of water, which exists even today! This miraculous event is commemorated in this beautiful icon showing the moment that the Theotokos commanded Athanasios to bring forth the water.

This icon is made of solid, natural limewood (Tilia) that has been prepared by hand using traditional methods and organic materials. The background is comprised of 22 Karat gold leaves that were meticulously applied by hand, piece by piece.

All of our icons are reproduced according to museum print standards and are authentic replicas of Holy Icons from Mount Athos and elsewhere.
