The Story Behind This Icon

In Orthodox Christian iconography, "Deisis" is a traditional representation of Christ Pantocrator, often but not always enthroned, and flanked by the Theotokos and other saints, facing towards Christ with their hands raised in supplication on behalf of humanity. And in this context, "deisis" means just that - "supplication". There are many ways to write a Deisis icon and Byzantine iconography in the Orthodox Church is filled with a myriad of beautiful examples.

This particular example depicts the supplication of the Theotokos and Saint John the Baptist to Christ, Who holds open the Gospel. Their heads are inclined to Christ and their hands are elevated in a gesture of prayer, supplicating Christ for His mercy on behalf of humanity.

This icon is made of solid, natural limewood (Tilia) that has been prepared by hand using traditional methods and organic materials. The background consists of 22 Karat gold leaves that were meticulously applied by hand, piece by piece. Subtle connecting lines and brush strokes may be visible on the gold leaves and are a testament to the artisan's hand, making each piece entirely unique.
