The Story Behind This Icon

Saint Simon the Canaanite is also known sometimes as Saint Simon the Zealot. Simon was known to Christ and His Mother, tradition holding that Simon was the bridegroom at the wedding in Cana, Galilee, where the Savior Christ performed his first miracle. After witnessing the turning of the water to wine, Simon became a zealous follower of Christ, and for this reason he is honored with the title "Zealot".

One of the Twelve Apostles, he received the Holy Spirit with the others on Pentecost. He traveled across the world, as far afield as Britannia in the West and the Black Sea in the East, proclaiming the Gospel and converting many thousands of pagans. He was perfected in martyrdom by crucifixion. He is commemorated on June 30 with the other Apostles.

This icon is made of solid, natural limewood (Tilia) that has been prepared by hand using traditional methods and organic materials. The background consists of 22 Karat gold leaves that were meticulously applied by hand, piece by piece. Subtle connecting lines and brush strokes may be visible on the gold leaves and are a testament to the artisan's hand, making each piece entirely unique.
